"Ducati Hypermotard Muffler-ectomy"

I decided to go ahead and try to modify my stock exhaust to get a little better sound from the Hypermotard 1100s.  I had read many post on Ducati.ms.  I found this PDF that explained how to open up the exhaust for better flow. (can't remember who originally posted it!  But major kudos!)

Tools needed:

  • Misc metric combo wrenches

  • Chop saw or hacksaw

  • 5/32" drill bit

  • Drill

  • Hammer

  • Center punch

  • Metric allen wrenches

  • Dremel with cut off wheel

First we start with a beautiful Ducati Hypermotard....
When I first got the Ducati I found a forum catering to Ducati enthusiast call Ducati.ms..... Specifically the Hypermotard section.  I was curious if anyone had ever modded the stock exhaust to get a little more sound and performance.  Sure enough I found four different post that showed the different ways they modified the stock exhaust.  Taking what they learned I was able to get a plan together to try my own modification.  At this time my bike is completely stock.
First thing was to remove the seat to get to the bolts that hold on the carbon fiber exhaust guards.
There were 3 bolts on each guard.  Two on the top and one on the bottom.  The one pictured is a bit tricky.  Be sure to loosen the nut on the bottom side that holds the battery holder/spacers first.  Then you can loosen the bolt.
The next thing was to removed the 4 bolts that hold the license plate holder on to the pipes.  Then remove the two longer bolts tucked up in the mud guard.
Loosen the clamp holding the exhaust to the up pipe from the catalytic converter.  Slide it down the pipe out of the way for now.
Loosen the 4 bolts that hold the exhaust to the mount on top of the cans.
 

Be sure to remove the two bolts that attach to a forward bracket
Once those bolts are all removed and the clamp loosened just wiggle the exhaust towards the rear of the bike and it will pull right off.   Loosen the clamp that holds the two exhaust together and pull the two apart.  While I had the pipes off I had to see what it sounded like with open pipe!  Click here!!! ;)
Using the 5/32" drill bit drill the rivets as far as the bit will let you go.  Then use a punch to push the rivets out.  Once the rivets are out the end caps will come right off.
The next step is to cut off the end of the muffler right after the shoulder where the aluminum end cap attaches. 
I slipped the open cans back on the bike for a quick sound test!  Click here!  ;)
I went and bought a dremel with some cut off wheels for the next step.  In order to open up all channels in the exhaust you need to remove the elbow tube that attached to the end pipe.
Once the inner end pipes are open up it's time to tig it all back together.  A great big thanks to my friend Murph who graciously agreed to weld it back together.
I used 600 grit sand paper to rough up the finish for paint.  I used a Rust-oleum Stove paint (1200°) to cover the pipes.  Next step was to attached the aluminum end caps.  I used 5/32" medium aluminum rivets to re-attach.
Installation was a piece of cake.  Just make sure to leave the clamps and bolts loose until you get everything lined up then tighten away!  Be sure to use Locktite™ on all the bolts that originally had Locktite™.   The end result was a slightly louder exhaust but with a deeper tone.  Check it out the video!
